After- vote get-together 2017

     Susan and I hosted our third "after-vote get-together" in the Civic Center again, since the elevator is not yet done. We had tea and coffee, cider, doughnuts, pulled pork sandwiches, cabbage and noodles,  broccoli-cheddar cheese soup,and chili.  We had our best turnout yet, and people expressed interest in seeing it continue after each election. People kindly donated enough to cover our expenses, with some left over to cover rent and food for our next one, which we HOPE can be in the Center Scool building, assuming the elevator is finished by that time. We will have to clear it with the Bosrd of Elections, but we hope to be far enough away at the east end of the building to satisfy their requirements; if not, it's back to the Civic    Center.  We see this as a place for people to gather AFTER voting, to chat with friends and have some light refreshments, and a close place for election workers and others to have a hot lunch in relative quiet.     Come visit us after you vote in the next election!

     We would like to thank Carole Pollard for making the cabbage and noodles this year. It took an extra load off of Susan. Thanks, Carole.

Corn Maze 2017

    Our food tent at Derthicks' Corn  Maze   continues to be the major fund-raising activity for the Mantua Restoration Society, Inc.. We set a record in 2016, and we beat that record this year. A big THANK YOU to all who have worked so hard to make it a success for the past five years. By now, all who contributed in any way this year should have received a personal thank you note in the mail. If we left anyone out, we sincerely apologize; it was absolutely unintentional.

     This was the first year that we did not have to physically brace the tent to keep it from blowing over,the first year we had 90+ degree temperatures,and the first yesr with only one day that had us all shivering. This was an autumn reminiscent of the 1950's, and we really appreciated it!     More and more people remark that they have waited all year for our homemade food, and Susan is always happy to share her recipes with any who ask. The weather and the increased patronage combined to make this a very enjoyable year.

     I have to mention that a large part of our success at the maze is a result of the huge effort made by Susan Buckles Pollard. Yes, she's my wife, and I am far from unbiased, but I am very impressed by how much she does every year.

She donates everything that she buys for the maze, from cups and bowls to all the food she prepares . We now own 12 crockpots, most of which go to the maze with us. Between food prep, serving food at the maze, making Sunday's food on Saturday night, and whatever cleanup I don' t get to, her Saturdays during the maze season often run to 18 hours. She considers this her annual donation to MaRSI. In no way do I mean to belittle anyone else's contributions, but Susan didn't send herself a thank you card, and I thought her efforts should be recognized by someone besides her husband.

     We would also like to thank K&K Meats in Mantua for their wonderful " Sweet Country Griller" sausages for our very popular sausage sandwiches,a big hit with our customers.

As always, we offer a heartfelt "Thank You" to the Derthick family for kindly inviting us back each year. Their support has made our success possible, and has helped to make the elevator at the former school building a reality. Thank you, Phil and Marie, Maryellen, and the entire staff. We look forward to the 2018 Corn Maze!

 

Elevator Update 2

As of November 15th, work on the elevator is (FINALLY!) , slowly, drawing to a close. This has been a very frustrating process for everyone, but most of all for trustee Vic Grimm, who has been the lead on this almost from the start. As you know, we were promised completion numerous times, only to see the promised date moved back repeatedly. There are still adjustments to be made, and required inspections, but it LOOKS like it MIGHT be ready and operational by the end of  THIS YEAR. We can hope!  As soon as we have definite information to go on, we can finalize plans and a date for a celebration. After all, we were told that, without an elevator, there was no sense in doing anything with that beautiful building. Thanks to diligent and unstinting work by Restoration Society members, plus the few non-members on the Grants and Funding Committee, we were able to secure the needed funding and achieve what many thought (and some few hoped) was impossible. At a later date, we will post the names of all who worked to make this happen. Watch for a CELEBRATION ANNOUNCEMENT to invite everyone to come and see what we've accomplished so far. Yes, there is much to be done yet,  but we are Mantua Township and the Mantua Restoration Society, and WE CAN DO THIS!

Elevator update #1

Progress is much slower than expected. As of 9/9/17, the entrance enclosure is built, and looks very nice,  matching the building's color as closely as can probably be expected. It is of block construction with a standing seam metal roof, and blends in very nicely. Inside, there is no visible evidence of any construction yet underway on the elevator car itself. That  work is projected to take another 5-6 weeks, plus at least one more week for testing, calibration, and inspection, etc.. There is a nice new sidewalk to the entry, with backfill and final grading of the adjacent slope to be done soon (we hope). Update #2 will appear here as soon as anything changes. Regrettably, all previous estimations of a completion date are obviously null and void. Stay tuned, and know that it will be completed!

Elevator Celebration

The elevator project is moving ahead in the Mantua Center School building, albeit more slowly than many of us wished or anticipated. However, the main thing is that it IS moving ahead. Most of the required new electrical service work is done, and now the elevator company can very soon begin to build the actual "passenger car" to carry people to all floors of the building. It has been a long haul , and sometimes very frustrating, not to mention very expensive, but keep in mind that the overwhelming majority of the cost has been covered by grant money, obtained by the Grants and Funding Committee. Very little of the cost to date has come from the township coffers. Once the elevator is in and working, we will give you a clearer picture of the cost proportions. You will almost certainly be very pleasantly surprised at just how much was covered by grant money and money raised by The Mantua Restoration Society and The Mantua Historical Society, and how little of the total came from Township funds. The Mantua Restoration Society is planning a party to celebrate the completion and full use of the elevator. Details are yet incomplete, but will be posted here as soon as we can make concrete plans and set a date, probably in September. 

In November, we hope to be able to have our "after-you-vote" get-together in the building, making use of the separate elevator entrance to gain the required distance from the polls. More on that later. If necessary, we'll hold it in the Civic Center again.
